THERE are many court stories that may leave readers uneasy and our report into the case of brain surgeon Ajay Gupta is one of them.

Police found him behind the wheel of a car surrounded by bottles of booze following a crash with a stationary vehicle.

Officers were not initially able to take a breathalyser reading from him because fears for his health meant they first had to take him to hospital rather than the local police station.

A later reading was still exceptionally high by any standards.

That this was a brain surgeon - someone we expect to be of the highest intelligence - shows just how universal the crime of drink driving can be. Men, women, young, old have all been brought before the courts for this particular offence.

To say Gupta cannot have been thinking is an understatement. This time he has been fortunate. Nobody was hurt and he has received a suspended sentence and, so far as we know, is still able to do his job. But it could easily have been a very different story for him and others who crossed his path.
