SIR – I must disagree with Tom Banner when he says the NHS is free.
If that’s the case why have I been paying income tax and national insurance all my working life?
What is true is that the NHS is free for some, ie heath tourists and people coming to this country having all manner of treatments without ever having paid into the system.

Isn’t it about time all visitors to this country were made to have medical insurance before they are allowed in?
And what about collecting some of the millions of pounds owed by people who have used the NHS and just returned to their own country without paying.
