WORRIED residents are already seeing the 'impact' of Charford's newly-formed neighbourhood watch scheme, claims one of its founder members.

'Charford Watch' was formed last autumn in response to ongoing criminal and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Since then, the estate has been rocked by the murder of 36-year-old Wayne Coventry in October and a stabbing in December.

But ahead of the group's next meeting, taking place at the end of January, district councillor Michael Thompson says the 'Watch' has made a great deal of progress.

"The neighbourhood watch scheme, along with other community programs that we have introduced, has created a real sense of ownership and responsibility," said Cllr Thompson.

"Residents have been proactive in working with partners, such as the police and BDHT (Bromsgrove District Housing Trust), and we are seeing the impact of our intervention.

"There is a long way to go but we have a clear message that we will not tolerate those who flout the law in our area."

The group will be meeting at the Golden Lion on Tuesday, January 28 at 7pm, with all Charford residents welcome to attend.

Local issues regarding crime will be discussed and the meeting will offer those present a chance to meet the new police officer who looks after the area, PC Chris Burns.

"Chris and [predecessor] Matt Pedrick have been exceptional in engaging with the community," added Cllr Thompson.
