A WYTHALL teenager with Down's syndrome received a special birthday surprise when neighbours celebrated the occasion by singing from their homes.

Family and friends at Green Close planned a big surprise for Reuben Bishop on his thirteenth birthday yesterday (March 26), amidst the current coronavirus lockdown.

The birthday boy’s mum Debbie Bishop said: “Turning 13 in the height of the coronavirus is not going to be the most fun he’s ever had, but we tried to make the most of it with no postman, missing cards, presents and no party.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have much planned for him because of the outbreak.

“The neighbours have a little Whatsapp group on the close and a couple of people wished him a happy birthday.

“They suggested I get Reuben out at a certain time so they could sing him happy birthday from out their windows.

“My mum and dad who live on the next road came and gave him a birthday bag. We haven’t been able to see them in a couple of weeks.

"I reached more people than I anticipated – it was lovely.

“Reuben’s a little showman at the best of times. When he discovered the audience was for him, he was egging them on.

“He’s used to being really tactile, which is tough now. When this is over, we will give him presents properly."

Debbie says that around 200 people messaged Reuben to wish him a happy birthday.

She added: “Because Reuben has Down's syndrome, it’s important for people to recognise him in the community.

“We improvised and has a birthday picnic in the living room and played pass the parcel.

“It was just about making the best out of the situation. It was amazing and very special.

“It’s something that he’s never going to forget.”
