A COUNCILLOR is calling for speed restrictions on a rat run road following a crash earlier this week in Worcester.

County councillor Matthew Jenkins is calling for a 20mph speed limit in Worcester’s Arboretum following a car crash which took place between Shrubbery Avenue and Flag Meadow Walk junction.

The two-car crash took place on Tuesday (June 2) morning at around 9am.

Cllr Jenkins said: “A number of residents contacted me about the accident as it keeps happening in this location.

“From the description I have received of the incident, the white car came down Shrubbery Avenue from the Barbourne Road direction, didn’t stop and hit the flatbed truck.

“It sounds like the white car did not give way.”

Cllr Jenkins added: “The roads in this area are quite narrow and nearly always have parked cars on them, so travelling much faster than 20mph is inherently dangerous.

“Therefore, having a 20mph speed limit in the surrounding area would be a start. The average speed is probably close to 20mph, but it only takes a few driving too fast to cause a problem.

“Secondly, and this was suggested by local residents, making this junction a raised table-top junction would be good. I would be fully supportive of this or something similar.”

Local residents are planning to produce a petition to introduce the slower speed limit.

Cllr Jenkins was elected as a county councillor in 2013 and he said his first piece of casework was due to an almost identical crash that resulted in a house on the corner losing their garden wall.

At the time, improvements were made with a Give Way sign on Shrubbery Avenue to be made bigger and clearer. Also, the line marking was increased to make it more obvious that this was a junction.

He said: “The changes to the junction probably did improve things, but did not eliminate the problem. I have asked for the tree by the Give Way sign to be trimmed as it may be obscuring the sign.”

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said: “We are working with partners to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash near Shrubbery Avenue and Flag Meadow Walk and we will liaise with local councillors to discuss any concerns.”
