GYMS in Herefordshire could reopen as early as next month and bosses are planning how they will keep everyone safe.

In the Government's "roadmap" document published in May, it said should the rate of transmission of the virus – the so-called R number – remains below one, gyms might be able to reopen in July.

But the same document said that if the R number crept above one, stricter controls could be reimposed.

But as the Government progresses the partial lifting of the lockdown, Halo Leisure, which runs centres in Hereford and surrounding towns, has revealed its plans on how they could reopen once given the green light.

"We are working hard behind the scenes implementing all the policies and measures which are necessary to make you feel comfortable and safe when you return," a spokesperson said.

"There are signs of recovery with our golf course and athletics track now open in Herefordshire. The social distancing and safety plans we put into place for customers and staff are working well.

"From July we hope to have some activities on offer at our centres. This is phase one of our reopening and it is unlikely that all activities will be available straight away.

"The 'what and when' detail will follow updated advice from the Chief Medical Officer and the Government."

As part of the new measures in place, Halo said all activities must be pre-booked and pre-paid.

Spaces in the gym, group exercise class, pool, golf course and toning suite and others will be able to be booked online or via the Halo Leisure app.

There will be an "enhanced cleaning regime" and hand sanitiser around its centres, which will go contactless as part of the new measures.

Gym equipment will be spaced out and the capacity of group exercise classes and swimming pools will be reduced to ensure the two metres recommended for social distancing can be maintained.
