AS LOCKDOWN measures start to ease and the weather improves, concerns have been raised over the potential for people flocking to outdoor spaces, creating dangerous situations.

West Mercia Police said visitors to Gullet Quarry, near Malvern, face a risk of drowning and spreading Covid-19 at mass gatherings.

In a tweet, West Mercia Police officers covering Malvern, said: “Putting up notices this afternoon advising of water safety at Gullet Quarry.

“It is popular all year round, but the warmer weather does bring a lot more visitors.”

Last month police moved more than 50 people on from the site in one day during a hot spell.

The quarry has seen several deaths in recent years with two happening within a week in 2013.

People heading outdoors to public parks to enjoy the sunshine are being warned to stick to the Covid social distancing rules.

A spokesman for Worcester City Council said: “We hope people will relax and enjoy the warm weather in Worcester’s parks and open spaces.

“Although the threat from coronavirus has reduced substantially, it hasn’t gone away.

“We would urge people to continue to respect social distancing rules to protect themselves, their families and others in the community.”

Malvern's mayor, Cllr Neil Morton, added: “People should feel able to enjoy the hills and commons in Malvern but be respectful of other people by social distancing.”

The fire service has warned against the use of disposable BBQs particularly in “open public areas”.

While Worcester city councillor Richard Udall said: “People need to stay alert and be careful.”

The Prime Minister announced yesterday that pubs will reopen from July 4 - as long as they are “Covid-secure”, and ‘one metre-plus’ distancing can be adhered to.
