CONCERNS have been raised over a planned ‘Pride’ event which has been organised on social media, to take place later in the month.

A group has been set up on Facebook called ‘Malvern PRIDE PARTY 2020’ - but the group is not affiliated to Malvern Pride, which is an established organisation supporting LGBTQ+ members of the community.

Superintendent Steph Brighton from West Mercia Police said: “We have been made aware of this proposed event being circulated on Facebook, which has not been arranged by the organising committee of Malvern Pride.

“We are making attempts to contact the organisers to make sure they are aware that mass gatherings of this nature are still prohibited.

“We fully understand how disappointing it is that events are being postponed or cancelled but this is still a necessity whilst the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic continues.

“For whatever reason people want to come together, we ask that you check the latest Government guidance, ensure social distancing and continue to work with us to keep yourselves, your families and our communities safe.”

We contacted ‘Malvern PRIDE PARTY 2020’ through Facebook and they told our reporter: “This is just a casual get together for people who still want to celebrate pride, we never thought it would attract so much attention, but we’re pleased to see that people still want to unite.”

A message on the group’s Facebook page for visitors stated: “Come at your own risk. This is a get together for Malvern pride at Priory Park.”

Malvern mayor, Cllr Neil Morton said: “Last year we were fully supportive of the organised Malvern Pride event and this year’s event was cancelled because of Covid-19.

“‘Malvern PRIDE PARTY 2020’ is not sanctioned by anyone and my advice would be to keep away.”
