IT is almost time for Redditch Labour Party's annual School Uniform Bank - and organisers say the need now is greater than ever before.

Councillor Joe Baker set up the uniform bank seven years ago after seeing families struggling to cope with rising costs.

He said he has seen the situation getting worse each year.

"The uniform bank was set up in response to the Conservative Government's attack on the lower paid and vulnerable in our society," he said.

"More and more people are struggling now then ever before, and finding hundreds of pounds to fund school uniforms and shoes for your children is an extra strain on any family income.

"I know first hand what it is like to be in a family who have to struggle to make ends meat. I am grateful my own mother was able to go to jumble sales and acquire second hand uniforms, I know personally what is like to stand out different from the other children whose families were better off."

Over the last seven years the uniform bank has helped hundreds of families in Redditch.

Councillor Bill Hartnett, Labour group leader said: "The School Uniform Bank has provided a safety net for a large number of families here in Redditch for seven years now. We are seeing an increase in use each year as more and more working families are struggling to cope financially.

"I encourage everyone in our community to donate their unwanted uniforms but also encourage local schools to get involved by collecting and donating lost property."

Cllr Baker added: "I am grateful to Nicki who is the manager at the Ecumenical Centre in Redditch for supporting us and allowing us to use the centre as a venue, as well as the many volunteers and other groups who support us."

The uniform bank will be held on Saturday, August 17 from 11am to 3pm at the Ecumenical Centre Redditch.

This is a free service but donations (shoes are desperately needed) are welcome.

Any schools or members of the public that are willing to help with donations can call Cllr Baker on 07891549333.

People can drop items at Omega Therapies, Newton House, Hewell Road or at the Ecumenical Centre.
