THE sound of house music wafted over Harvey Nichols restaurant as Birmingham's beautiful things tucked into their al a carte dinners.

The modern eatery in the high end department store is about as far from where I normally eat as can be but the laid back vibe brought back memories of a misspent youth of lazy days and crazy nights in Britain's second city.

The restaurant is offering a summer deal which includes three courses from a set menu and a cocktail for £22 until August 31 which is sure to entice customers into the Mailbox.

The choice of starters were gazpacho, citrus marinated vegetables, puffed wild rice and Wye Valley asparagus, smoked salmon snow, lemon.

My gazpacho was presented beautifully and the flavours were delicately put together to ensure the Andalusian tomato cold soup was delightful.

My partner ordered the salmon snow, and as soon as it came immediately I wished I had. There really was not enough to share either but it looked like a work of art and she happily told me it tasted better than my gazpacho.

The three choices for main course were grilled pave rump beef, broccoli and watercress puree, fillet of Torbay sole, spinach, pickled cucumber and pea and broad bean risotto.

I ordered the rump beef along with sides of new season potatoes and cavolo nero (kale) with chilli butter.

Again the presentation was top drawer and worthy of a class restaurant and my medium to rare meat had that flash of red which signalled the taste was just what I wanted.

My partner had the Torbay sole which she assured me tasted as good as it looked.

For dessert the choices were lime tart with clotted cream, Pimms jelly with strawberry panna cotta and Eton mess.

My Pimms jelly went down better than a jug of the stuff watching Wimbledon and my partner's Eton mess was fantastic too.

The Harvey Nichols restaurant was full when we left and after a tipple at it's champagne bar it was time to leave the beautiful people to enjoy their night out.
