WYRE Forest enjoyed a bumper crop of gongs at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Sports awards.

The district had four winners at a glittering night at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways home.

Samurai Judo Club, Paralympic swimmer Claire Cashmore, Stourport fencer Danielle Lawson and golfer Henry James left with accolades in recognition of their efforts.

The biggest winner was six-time Paralympic medallist Cashmore, who saw her efforts at the London 2012 Games recognised with the disabled sports personality of the year award.

The 24-year-old won two silvers and one bronze in a memorable summer as she saw off the challenge of Redditch cricketer Luke Sugg and Bromsgrove’s Glenn Scott for the award.

Kidderminster Golf Club’s James, 18, was named senior sportsman of the year ahead of Malvern’s Barry Swindells and Jason Copsey from the University of Worcester.

He made his breakthrough this year by finishing second in the British Boys Amateur Championships as well as captaining Worcestershire under-18s. He also represented Wales in the HRH Duke of York Champion of Champions event.

James is now taking a year out to concentrate on playng golf, and aims to represent Wales as a full international next year.

He said: “It was amazing to win this award, to be with so many top sports people from the county was really interesting.

“With so many stars from the Paralympics there as well it was a good chance to talk to them.

“Winning this award says how well I did this year.”

Samurai were named the county’s club of the year for a second time.

With a new £350,000 home, a host of officials taking part in the London Olympics and membership now above the 150-mark, Samurai has emerged as the region’s leading judo club.

Finally, Stourport Fencing Club member Lawson was named junior sportswoman of the year.

The Worcester RGS pupil finished eighth at the Wroclaw Cup in Poland as part of England’s under-15s girls epee squad.

Lawson was third in the under-14s age section at British Championships and is ranked as England’s top under-15s girl.

The winners had qualified for the counties by coming through Wyre Forest District Council’s Awards.
