WYRE Forest athletes returned from the Special Olympic National Games in Bath with a host of medals.

A large contingent from the district were representing Special Olympics Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

Jamie Dancyger was in brilliant form on the track, winning gold in the 5,000 metres and a bronze in the 1,500m.

Ian Harper won a gold medal in the shot put and also competed in the 100m and 200m.

There were two bronzes for Sophie Lane in the 100m and long jump, while Amelia Martin earned a silver in the 100m.

Alicia Bradshaw, in her first National Games, also won a silver medal in the 100m.

There was also silver medal success for the men’s 4x100m A and B squads, with the former setting a new best time of 53 minutes and 14 seconds, and the women’s 4x100m relay squad.

Gary Turnbull also took part and although he did not win any medals tried really hard and was a credit to the team.

Fifteen swimmers from the county also represented the West Midlands at the Games, with 10 coming from the Wyre Forest area.

It was a hard competition, involving trips to Bristol everyday and with nearly 400 swimmers from all over Britain.

The squad achieved five gold, two silver and seven bronze medals with 17 personal best times.

Ellie Jones from Wilden won gold for the 25-metre backstroke, silver for the 25m freestyle and bronze for the 50m freestyle with two personal best times, while brother Martin won gold in the 50m backstroke and a best in the 50m freestyle.

Steven Boyce won gold in the 100m freestyle and Richard Allen-Trew was victorious in the 25m backstroke.

Boyce’s sisters Caroline, Katy and Debbie had to settle for bronze in the 50m backstroke, 25 freestyle and 50m freestyle relays respectively, with two personal bests for Caroline.

Matthew Jones and Jordan Watts set personal best times and Richie Styles just missed out on the medals in the 25m freestyle, gaining a fourth place.

There was also success for Wyre Forest in the gymnastics arena, with Tom Keeley taking gold on the high bar, silver on the pommel and paralell Bars, bronze on rings and sixth place on floor and vault in level one as he finished fifth overall.

Keiran Constantinou, 12, also performed well on his Games debut, winning the floor, rings, vault and high bar and a silver medal on the parallel bars and pommel to secure overall gold.
