WYRE Forest swimmers Fran O’Connor and Claire Cashmore got among the medals while representing the West Midlands at the DSE National Short Course Championships.

The resurgent O’Connor enjoyed her best tournament for several years in Sheffield, winning gold in the 100-metre individual medley in the S7 disability category.

She also took silver in the 100m freestyle — shaving a minute off her most recent time in the process — and was second in the 50m freestyle.

In the medley relay, O’Connor and Cashmore helped a regional quartet take bronze.

O’Connor then won her second gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Six-time Paralympic Games medal winner Cashmore was also in fine form in her individual events, taking silver in the S9 100m freestyle.

She also was runner-up in her category in the 100m race.

Fran’s father Kevin O’Connor said: “There was a very strong turn out from the country’s best swimmers but the girls were right up there. Fran set some of her fastest times for several years.”
