KIDDERMINSTER Victoria CC are aiming to build on their first league win by grabbing more points from their testing Bank Holiday weekend fixtures.

The team is in confident mood after recording their first win in the Birmingham and District League Premier Division after seeing off Coventry and North Warwickshire.

Now they will be turning their attention to Shifnal at home on Saturday and Knowle and Dorridge away on Bank Holiday Monday.

With all the teams in the Premier Division separated by just a handful of points captain Jonathan Wright is hoping two wins will see his side jump up the table from third from bottom into the top half.

"The division is so tight at the moment we could win both our fixtures and be in the top half of the table," said Wright.

"Shifnal are in a similar position to us last season because they're new in the division. They'll be thinking they can get some points off us.

"But we're only missing one player so we're in good shape. We have a lot more strength in depth than last season and have the best team spirit I have ever experienced at the club. I am confident we can have a good season."

With opening batsmen Jimmy Taylor back and Pete Stevens also returning Kidderminster are looking in good shape for the weekend's games.

The only absence is Will Gifford, who will not be available until mid-June, when he finishes university.

Wright was also full of praise for Mark Mansell, whose stunning 11-over spell yielded three wickets for no runs and Coventry.

"We didn't want to say anything before the game about its importance but it was a relief to win the match," said the captain.

"It's amazing how a win can make a lot of difference. We now look forward to our next matches with a lot more confidence.

"It was a good performance by the team. We bowled, batted and fielded really well and it was the first time this season all three departments had worked together.

"It was a phenomenal performance by Mark. To not concede a run in 11 overs and take three wickets is outstanding.

"We probably needed a big performance and Mark did it brilliantly."

l Kidderminster's game against Kenilworth Wardens in the Cockspur National Knockout Cup on Sunday has been moved to June 3 because of the Bank Holiday weekend fixtures.

Andrew Siwicki's century was the difference as Kidderminster saw off Kington by six wickets in the second regional round.

Wright said: "Lower ranked sides could give us a surprise but we handled the game well."
