TEENAGER Lucas Kent has been making the most of his competition time on the judo mat for Samurai Judo Club.

The sixteen-year-old black belt travelled to the West of England Open and took the silver medal during a performance which included a win in the semi-final against a strong Grimsby player.

He also travelled to the Nottingham Open where he was in a heavier weight group than usual but still did well to take another silver.

Samurai's Olivia Turner also took part in the Nottingham event and made her way comfortably into the final of her category.

She was winning the final with ease when she was taken ill and had to retire, therefore having to accept the silver medal.

Youngster Meghann O’Sullivan took part in the British Adaptive Championships (formerly British Special Needs Championships) in London.

In her first time at this event Meghann won a silver medal after four contests.

Elsewhere, Mike Parkes became the Samurai club’s latest new referee after passing his practical assessment.

The black belt was one of five Samurai players to pass the theory course in July but the first to take the practical.

Jake Ashen, Ellie McAteer and Mark and Matt Allen are all expected to take their practical test in November, having passed their theory at the same time as Mike.
