STOURPORT did not take the lead against Coventry Sphinx until the very last minute – but Mark Danks’ far post header from Drew Canavan’s cross was right on time to give Swifts their third straight win.

The Swifts were behind in the first minute when Matt Hanson’s weak clearance fell at the feet of Alex Pearson who duly blasted past Dom Richards from 15 yards to put Sphinx in front, but the Swifts response was just as sharp, when Danks was put through by Canavan just three minutes later, who fired low past Coventry keeper Tom Cross to level the scores.

Lewis Platt produced a last ditch tackle to deny Dan Kelly, then Canavan, linking well with Nick MacPherson, shot narrowly wide when perhaps he could have done better. Swifts had a narrow escape when Matt Gardner’s header from a Hudson corner came back off the post, and Richards did well to block the follow up shot from the rebound, but Gardner made no mistake two minutes later when he forced in from close range after twice failed to clear to put the home side back in front. On the stroke of half time Danks neatly played Canavan in, but his low drive was well saved by the advancing Cross.

Stourport started brightly after the break, and Danks was twice denied an equaliser by two outstanding saves from Cross, one after being put clear by MacPherson, and the other a fierce 25 yarder which was just tipper over the top. With 76 minutes gone, Canavan broke free down the left and squared low for Platt, racing 40 yards to support, to fire in from close range to level.

Swifts chance to clinch the win looked to have gone after Danks’ effort was ruled out for offside, but on the stroke of full time Canavan again produced the cross that mattered for Danks to head home the winner to make it 3-2.

Stourport are away at South Normanton Athletic this Saturday.
