STRIKER Richard Greaves fired Westfields into the third round of the FA Vase after his side came back from a goal down in difficult conditions to take a 2-1 win at Leicester Nirvana on Tuesday night.

After knocking Fields out of the competition last season, the Leicestershire hosts took a 25th minute lead when a long-range effort caught goalkeeper Harvey Rivers off his line.

However, Fields responded in the second half and on a heavy pitch equalised on the hour when Aidan Thomas rifled home from the edge of the penalty area.

Phil Glovers side went for victory and an effort crashed off the bar before Thomas fired just wide. The winner eventually came in the 80th minute when Ben Hayes found a darting Greaves to slide home the winner.

“Late in the second half there was only one team going to win and we had chances before our winner,” said Westfields manager Glover.

“The boys showed really good character and the spirit we have shown all season. Even though we have a lot of the same players as last season the additions have improved us massively and we are in better shape than last year.

The match had been postponed on two previous occasions and Glover said that conditions weren’t much better this time around.

“I was glad to get the game on, but I don’t know how as the pitch still had standing water on it,” he added.

“It was such a poor pitch and we had several players out as the combined forces had a game, so to win with everything against us made it sweeter.”

Westfields will now host Lutterworth Town in the third round on Saturday, November 30, with the winner claiming £1,125.
