Kidderminster Harriers’ Mark Carrington has announced his retirement after a 16-year playing career.
The experienced midfielder, 35, only joined the side at the start of the season, following stints with Wrexham, MK Dons, Bury and Crewe Alexandra among others, making 439 appearances in the process.
In his sole season at Aggborough, Carrington helped the side to a play-off spot and a remarkable FA Cup run, starting in the narrow lost to West Ham United.
He took to Twitter to confirm his retirement, writing: “After a lot of thought and with a heavy heart, I've decided the time is right to hang my boots up.
“I've achieved my boyhood dreams to become a professional footballer.
“I've made some amazing memories and met some even better people along the way.
“Being able to take my children on the pitch and seeing their faces has been priceless.”
He continued: “I would like to thank all players/staff/fans who have been involved in my journey.
“The biggest thank you goes to my family who have been my biggest supporters through thick and thin.
“Although I always knew this day would come, it's a sad day! But I wanted to bow out on my terms.
“The Wrexham and Kidderminster fans have been a hell of a great bunch and I'll be sure to be returning to The Racecourse and Aggborough.”
Carrington’s announcement came as Harriers confirmed that five players are to leave the club following the end of their contracts.
In addition to Carrington, Keith Lowe, Luke Simpson, Nyal Bell, and Lewis Montrose will all depart.
Joe Foulkes, Corey Panter, Devonte Redmond will all return to their respective parent clubs following a loan spell at Aggborough.
Meanwhile, the club has stated it is working to sort new deals with several players.
Discussions are ongoing with Nathan Cameron and Cliff Moyo while new contracts will be offered to Tom Palmer, Geraldo Bajrami, Omari Sterling, Jaiden White and Jamie Emery.
A statement on Kidderminster’s website reads: “We would like to thank each player for their efforts at the club over the course of the season – a fantastic campaign in which every player has played their part.
“Mark Carrington has confirmed that he is to retire from football – everyone associated with the club wishes Mark well for the future and whatever comes next.”
