BEWDLEY CC suffered their first defeat of the season in the Worcestershire League Division Two after going down to Colwall on Saturday.

After winning the toss and bowling first, Bewdley started off well, with Mike Harris taking an early wicket.

However, Colwall's Nick Panniers (81) and Tim Riley (36) started to notch up the runs for Bewdley's opponents.

A flurry of wickets from Mark Venross (4-72) and Jack Mills (2-72) damaged Colwall's progress but Bewdley were frustrated by tail-ender Ed Smith, who hit 50 runs and guided them to 260.

Bewdley's reply got off to a bad start with the loss of three early wickets and they were reduced to 3-3.

Only captain Simon Mauger (24) and Tom Baylis (15) got into double figures and offered any resistance as Bewdley were bowled out for 86 runs.

On Monday, Bewdley's hopes of an immediate response to the loss at Lye was cut short by torrential rain.

Batting first the team reached 134, with Martyn Carr hitting 67 runs off as many balls, before the weather forced the game off.

Defeat on Saturday and Monday's abandoned game saw Bewdley knocked off the top spot and slip to third.

Bewdley's second team got the better of Colwall on Saturday.

Captain Dave Jones won the toss and decided to put the home side into bat and watched as they were dismissed for 169, with fine bowling from Sean Robinson (3-40) Chris Darby (4-28) and Jones (2-24).

Bewdley secured victory in the 36th over after recovering from 9-2, with Jones (50), Matt Thwaites (43) and Andy James steering their side to 175-4.

The seconds bowled only 37 overs against Oldswinford on Monday, before rain stopped play.

Bewdley kept Oldswinford to 115-6. with wickets from Dave Cowdery, Simon Smith Dave Jones and two for Mark Hudson.
