SUPER-substitute Adam Hazeldine came off the bench to tame Warstones Wanderers and ensure Bewdley Town powered into the second qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday.

Hazeldine, who works as a lion tamer at the West Midland Safari Park, bagged a second half hat-trick to ensure Town got the better of Warstone 6-0.

Success ensures that they now meet Leicestershire outfit Hinckley Downes on Sunday, September 20 at Hinckley United’s ground (3pm kick-off).

In-form hitman Lewis Pountney opened the scoring, before Grant Joshua doubled Town's advantage from the penalty spot.

Chris Hough scored another penalty and Hazeldine, who replaced the injured Joshua, ensured the rout with his treble.

Joint manager Craig Payton was delighted to see his town progress into the next round of the competition after the disappointment of being knocked out of the FA Cup by Alvechurch in August.

He said: “The Vase is a competition that we have a chance of reaching the quarter or semi-finals, so we’re delighted to get through.

“Adam is nicknamed ‘The Lion Tamer’ by the lads and I’m delighted that he scored because he’s not had many chances to play this season.”

After a slow start to the campaign, the goals has started to flow in prodigious fashion for the Ribbesford Meadows outfit and Saturday’s victory over Warstones made it 20 goals in four games.

Four days earlier they had blasted six past Wellington in the West Midlands League Premier Division, despite goalkeeper Tom Harper being sent off.

Goals for Hough, Pountney and Shaun Wright had ensured Town were 3-0 ahead, only for Harper to be sent off after a he brought down a Wellington player in the box.

With back up keeper Darren Steadman assisting Pountney in the absence of joint manager Brian Lacey, outfield player Gary Middleton went in goal but could not save the resulting penalty.

Wellington pulled another goal back but Pountney, last season’s top scorer, produced an impressive solo display up front with three second half strikes.

“Only Lewis is capable of playing up front on his own and scoring like that in our division,” enthused Payton.

Bewdley will be without the suspended Shaun Wright, who is out for one match, and Dave Canham (absent for three) for Saturday’s league clash at home to Heath Town Rangers.

Striker Richard Burgess (back) and Steve Holt (ankle) are also set to miss the game.

Town then entertain Ledbury in the league on Wednesday at home (7.45pm kick-off).
