STOURPORT Boat Club began the winter rowing season in style with four wins at the Worcester Small Boats Head tournament over the weekend.

The club’s crews were in fine form at the tournament, which sees boats race long distances while trying to set the fastest times.

The performance of the day came from Stourport men’s Intermediate two coxed four, who won their event and were the fastest men’s sweep oar crew.

The boat, consisting of Joe Dyer, Justin Conner, Alex Barnett, Jamie Wrafter and coxed by Nikki Hickman, were racing at novice status in the early summer but have progressed undefeated to Intermediate two status in a very short time.

In the sculling events, Duncan Gwilliam continued his winning streak in the veteran D singles event and Don Taylor won the veteran C singles category.

Finally, the women’s Intermediate three coxed four of Siobhan Adams, Mary Bytheway, Annie Conway and Sharon Jones (coxed by Jayne Price) won their event over a strong field from Worcester, Upton and Kings School Worcester.

Newly elected captain of Rowing Pete Lashford of Areley Kings said: “It’s a good start and one that we will build on.

“We have a strong squad this year with over 30 new members recruited from the Pubs and Clubs Regatta in June.

“On top of that we have an exciting new ‘Learn to Row’ project starting in the New Year that will make rowing more accessible and affordable for the local community.”
