DEFENDER Gavin Caines believes Harriers young guns have staked a claim for regular first-team places after impressing in Saturday's 2-0 win over Matlock Town in the FA Trophy.

Jasbir Singh, Nathan Hayward and striker Aaron Farrell all made strong contributions to Harriers, who had been hit hard by suspensions, ineligible players and illness.

Farrell was particulary impressive and had a hand in both of the Aggborough outfit's goals.

Caines said: "I thought the lads that came in did really well and gave the gaffer some food for thought for Saturday's game.

"Jasbir Singh did well, as did Nathan Hayward and Azzer (Aaron Farrell) was superb and caused Matlock all sorts of problems in the second half.

"The lads have put a claim in for Saturday and the manager has a choice to make."

Despite missing the likes of David McDermott, Damian Spencer, Ryan Charles, Martin Riley and first-choice shot-stopper Dean Coleman left on the bench because of a stomach bug, Harriers dominated the match on a pitch which cut up badly.

Late goals from Robbie Matthews and Chris McPhee ensured Harriers' passage into round two of the Trophy.

Caines added: "It was a tough game and we knew what we were up against, the gaffer had spoken to us all week about what to expect.

"The pitch wasn't the best and we had to match them in the first 20 minutes and make sure we were on top and show them what we can do.

"I thought for the majority of the game we were on top but we didn't get the goals until late on but we were pleased to get into the next round."
