IMPRESSIVE Swifts savoured a sweet Easter Bank Holiday as they picked up four points from two Southern League Midlands Division One clashes.

The Walshes Meadow outfit hammered derby rivals Bromsgrove Rovers 5-1 on Saturday, before earning a well-deserved point with a 0-0 draw at Romulus on Monday.

Those points keeps manager Neil Hunt’s hopes of a mid-table finish alive.

But while he was happy to see his side do well, there were mixed feelings from both matches for the Swifts boss.

Hunt lamented the decline of Bromsgrove Rovers this season, who have been badly hit by their fall into administration, while Swifts could have returned home with maximum points from Romulus.

“It’s sad to see a club that was in the Football Conference 15 years ago in the shape that it's in at the moment,” commented Hunt.

“We were losing 1-0 at half-time and I went mad because we shouldn't have been losing to a team as poor as that.

“It was excellent to score five goals and secure a derby win but it’s a strange one because you don’t like to see a club like Bromsgrove Rovers in the situation they’re in.”

Hunt added about Monday’s draw: “There was one shot on target in the entire game and Romulus’ keeper pulled off a good save.

Alex Lavery was probably or man of the match but he missed a few one-on-ones and headed wide twice.

“That's been the story of our season, we should be 20 points better of this campaign on the basis of our performances.”

On Saturday, Swifts staged an impressive second half fight back after Stuart Hall had put Rovers ahead from the penalty spot.

Central defender Dene Wittal-Williams headed them level just seven minutes after the restart, before substitute Louis Bridges, Mark Benbow, Lavery, Will Gayton and Dan Polan got their names on the scoresheet.

Two day later, Swifts had the best chances against Romulus but couldn’t take them.

Julian Triana was denied by the keeper, while Lavery squandered a host of chances and also directed two headers off target from corners.

Striker Chris Cornes also made cameos over the weekend after a two-month lay-off with an ankle injury, however, he may not start Saturday’s trip to Burnham in the league on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Swifts will be back in action next Tuesday in their rearranged home clash against Bedworth (7.45pm kick-off).

Hunt said: “Chris has just come back from his ankle ligament injury but it will take time.

“He’s had run outs over the weekend but it might be a bit too soon for Saturday’s game to start him.

“We've gone with the young guys instead and their performances have been pleasing.”
