Harriers midfielder John Finnigan is set to step up his training as he battles to overcome a calf injury.

The 34-year-old has yet to kick a ball in anger in pre-season because of the persistent problem could play some part in Saturday's pre-season clash at home to former side Nottingham Forest (3pm kick-off).

Finnigan played in Forest's reserves before moving to Lincoln City as a youngster.

Manager Steve Burr has heavily rebuilt Harriers' midfield this summer, with Keith Briggs, Tom Shaw and David Hankin all joining and David McDermott, Dean Bennett and Brian Smikle departing.

But assistant manager Gary Whild believes the former Cheltenham man has a part to play this season.

"John has stepped up his training and we're hoping he will be able to play some part of the next few weeks of pre-season," commented Whild.

"It's frustrating for him because he wants to be playing.

"He's an excellent player and we want him to be on the pitch, he's a big part of our plans.

"We've got some young lads here and an experienced guy like John can play an important role."

Finnigan joined in the summer of last year on a two-year deal but a host of injuries meant he only made 18 starts in the Blue Square Premier.

However, he played a pivotal role when Burr took over as manager and Harriers went on a 10-game unbeaten run.

Chris McPhee may also be a doubt after breaking a bone in his nose in Tuesday's win at Chasetown.

Winger David Hankin misses the game to be best man at his brother's wedding.

Meanwhile, striker Paul Connor, who has played in three Harriers friendlies, has been on trial at Gateshead this week.

With 17 players contracted, although Gavin Caines is looking for a new club, Burr is close to putting the final touches to his squad.

"Steve and I have got our thoughts on the trialists," added Whild.

"We don't want to mess them about because they have to find clubs.

"It's a double-edged sword, really, because the longer they stay at a club the more confident they will get."

Forest are set to bring a squad containing a mixture of senior squad and junior players.
