LAYTON Wilkinson inspired Kidderminster Carolians to kick-off their home fixtures in the Midlands Division Two West (South) with a rousing 32-5 victory over Old Coventrians on Saturday.

KCs bounced back from an opening day defeat to Cheltenham North with an impressive display.

Wilkinson's four-try burst and one for captain Stuart Such also ensured the Marlpool Lane-based outfit were able to take advantage of the new bonus point system introduced this campaign.

Victory propelled them into fifth place two games into the season.

It took the hosts 10 minutes to settle but Andy McLellan sparked an attack with a kick into Coventrians' 22-yard area. Jack Tustall won the ball from a lineout and a rolling maul allowed Such to grab the home team's first try.

KCs continued to dominate the first half and Wilkinson opened his account for the match to double their lead to 10-0.

Slick passing kept the pressure on Coventrians, who conceded a penalty, and KCs forced a lineout, from which Wilkinson was on hand to score from a rolling maul.

Coventrians' defence was creaking under the pressure and were pushed back deep and forced to defend their own try line.

Wilkinson made it 15-0 when he drove over from close range.

Andy McLellan kicked a penalty after good work by scrum half Scott Lovell as KCs went into the break 18-0 ahead.

McLellan's trusty foot was called into action again in the second half, after Wilkinson had pounced on the loose ball and crashed over, kicking the conversion to make it 25-0 to KCs.

Wilkinson then made sure of the man of the match award when he pounced from a scrum, pushed over by his team mates, and McLellan kicked the conversion to secure Coventrians' defeat.

With the game won, KCs were punished for taking their foot off the accelerator by their opponents scored a consolation try.

KCs start the Midlands Intermediate Cup on Saturday away to Stafford (3pm start).

Cleobury Mortimer got off the mark in the Midlands Division Four West North with a 26-7 win over Warley.

In the Midlands Division Five West North, Stourport romped to a 34-3 win over Hanford.
