ROWERS from Bewdley Rowing Club and Stourport Boat Club cruised to success at this year's successful Bewdley Regatta notching up 29 wins between them.

The home club finished the weekend with 15 wins narrowly beating local rivals Stourport , who had 14.

But both clubs were pipped to the top Victor Ludorum trophy by Worcester Rowing Club who recorded 17 wins.

Around 2,000 competitors from as far afield as Reading, Oxford, Nottingham and even Holland took to the water at the annual event on Saturday and Sunday as spectators lined the riverbank.

Bewdley's Matt Collier, Ben Warnett, Simon Barbour, Simon Collingridge, Ben Beven, Rossco Haynes, Matt Thomas, Andy Phillips and cox Zena Clark saw off competition from Royal Chester RC in the senior 3 eights event.

Rich Jackson, Simon Thornycroft, Sean Raybould, Dan Gurney also from the home club sailed to victory with cox Sian Thompson in the senior 2 coxed fours race.

It was a family affair for two of the competitors as Derek Chapman was in the winning Bewdley veteran novice fours crew who triumphed over Straford-Upon-Avon BC with his 16-year-old daughter Anna coxing.

Anna, who attends Bewdley High School, also celebrated success in the women's novice eights and the women's novice fours events.

It was also a good weekend for Bewdley's Kate Crowther Green and Olivia Mockett who had success in both the women's novice eights and women's junior 15 double sculls while Emily McCoy was also in the winning women's novice eights and novice fours.

In the junior classes the home club was victorious in the 16 sculls and 14 sculls as well as the women's 15 double sculls while Stourport BC stole the show in the 15 sculls and the womens 12 sculls.

Stourport's other winning crews included the senior 2 eights, who beat Bridgnorth RC, and included Pete Lashford, and his son Mat as well as Stewart Barnett and his son Luke.

The senior 2 coxless fours saw off competition from Minerva Bath RC and in the novice sculls event the club triumphed over Falcon RC.

Brothers Mat and Dan Brighton won the junior 15 double sculls class, Gary Hickman took top place in the junior 13 sculls event, which was his first ever race, and Hannah Brighton, Katie Haywood and sisters Charlotte and Rebecca Gibson finished first in the women's junior 15 coxed quads..

Bewdley RC secretary, Anne O'Connell said the regatta was a success.

She added: "The local clubs did best out of everybody. Bewdley got 14 wins. We only had a few last year so it was much better."
