KIDDERMINSTER Carolians RFC put their poor league form behind them to power into the quarter-finals of the North Midland Shield after sweeping Moseley Oak aside with a 67-36 win on Saturday.

KCs ran in 11 tries, with captain John Mounter and brothers Craig and Layton Wilkinson scoring a hat-tricks, but their opponents from a level below in the Midlands Three West (North) gave them a game, scoring five touch downs in reply.

Away side KCs retained possession in the opening exchanges with some excellent offloading but without reward and when Moseley eventually got hold of the ball they took the lead with a penalty confidently knocked over by their fullback.

The Marlpool Lane side replied strongly, with Layton Wilkinson forcing a ruck, which created an opening for fullback Nick Martin to come into the line and cross for a try.

A strong burst by Chris Baldwin set up Mounter for a try, converted by Andy McLellan, and two five metre scrums saw Layton Wilkinson plunge over on both occasions to establish a healthy 22-3 advantage.

Some sloppy defending let in Moseley at the left corner flag but with an air of inevitability, KCs' forward superiority enabled the unstoppable Wilkinson to complete his hat-trick from another five metre scrum, while McLellan’s conversion stretched the away side's lead to 29-8.

Some slick handling by KCs saw centre Craig Wilkinson cross for a score which took them into the break comfortably ahead 34-15.

The centre then combined to great affect with Mounter to ensure the latter bagged his second try, which again was kicked by McLellan.

Layton Wilkinson was substituted and the home side took advantage of his absence in midfield to grab two converted efforts and reduce to deficit.

But KCs stepped it up again and tries for Craig Wilkinson and Mounter, both converted, restored the away team's big lead.

McLellan grabbed his own try when he latched onto a Mounter grubber-kick and his conversion put KCs ahead 62-29.

Moseley were not finished and took advantage of yet more flimsy defending to run in a fifth try.

The aggregate score went past the 100 mark when Wilkinson rounded off a frenetic match with a try, which was gifted to him by tired opposition, but the conversion was pulled wide from right in front of the sticks and rather aptly summed up the hit and miss nature of the whole afternoon.

KCs return to action in Division Two West (South) on Saturday, when they take on Bedworth away.

The under-15s were too strong for Old Saltleians in the cup when they scored nine tries to win 55-0.

Joe Carey Jenkins (3) Mitchell Dwyers, (2) Dan Cooper (2) Miles Perry and Liam Harrison all grabbed tries.

David Bisset kicked four conversions, while Mitchell Dwyers converted another.
