BEWDLEY Town FC maintained their excellent form in the West Midlands League Premier Division with a 5-0 victory against Shawbury United and a hard fought 3-3 draw against Wolverhampton Sporting Community, writes James Holder.

At the weekend a first half hat-trick from Chris Hough and a goal from Alex Taffe saw Bewdley take a 4-0 first half lead against United.

After the break, a fantastic 30-yard goal from Dan Flowers capped a superb Bewdley performance and extended their recent run of good form.

Joint manager Craig Payton said: “It was probably the best football we have played all season.

“We were chuffed with the 5-0 and Dan Flowers’ volley was a wonder goal, it was goal of the game.

“We played very very well and that was the pleasing thing.”

On Tuesday, the performance wasn’t quite as emphatic as Town drew 3-3 with bottom side Wolverhampton Sporting Community.

They went in at half-time 1-0 down but two second half goals from Hough saw Bewdley take the lead, only for Sporting to equalise.

Steve Holt then put Bewdley into 3-2 lead, but unfortunately Town were unable to hang on and Community equalised again.

Reflecting on the game Payton said: “For their first goal the defence got on the wrong side but we got back into the game with a great move, Alex Taffe put in a good cross for Hough to make it 1-1.

“Their second was a flukey goal, it was a miss-kick and we thought it had hit the top of the net but it had gone in. It was a good draw away from home.”

Payton also went on to praise in form striker Hough, adding: “Chris has got five goals in his last two games, it’s his best start to the season for two or three years, he's a fantastic player.”

Bewdley travel to mid-table Wednesfield on Saturday but they will have to go without Craig Forbes, Richard Burgess, Gavin Smith and Craig Webb who are all injured (3pm kick-off).
