DRAW specialists Kidderminster Victoria CC took the lion's share of the points as they edged out Birmingham and District League Premier Division stalwarts Knowle and Dorridge.

Saturday's winning draw was KVCC's fourth of the season and sixth draw overall in a frustrating season for the mid-table Chester Road outfit.

On this occasion, the 11 points generated were well-earned in a match that was severely affected by the rain.

Home side Knowle only had 37 overs to set down a total after their innings was delayed by 73 minutes by the weather and made 216-5.

KVCC only had 25 overs to make their mark in reply and surpassed the target of 147 by hitting 149-8.

After hard work by Knowle to get the game on, KVCC won the toss and put the home team into bat.

It soon paid dividends as Chris Whelan bowled Alec Baker with his third ball. However, Knowle responded with a second-wicket stand of 117 between Justin Hemming and Luke Parker.

Gareth Williams bowled as economically as usual but Whelan lost a bit of control towards the end of his stint, taking 1-62 from his 12 overs.

Hemming found scoring somewhat difficult but had reached 55 when he was caught by Williams on the boundary off the bowling of Mark Mansell.

Only 23 runs were added before a third wicket fell. Attiq Chistie failed to make his ground and was run out for 15. Three runs later it was 143-4, when stand-in wicketkeeper Neil Pinner took a good catch off the bowling of his Worcestershire colleague Matt Pardoe to send Dan Myers back to the pavilion for a duck.

Thirty of the allotted 37 overs had been bowled, with Parker in fine form. The score had risen to 173 when his partner Tom McNellie (19) was out caught by Pardoe bowled Williams.

Skipper Jamie Spires set about raising the total. He was soon showing his intentions, scoring 29 off 12 balls, hitting five boundaries and one six.

At the close of the innings he was not out and his partner Luke Parker had reached 93, just short of the century he deserved.

Whelan, Pardoe, Mansell and Williams had taken one wicket each, with the latter’s figures showing he conceded just 39 runs off his 12 overs.

With 147 inside 25 overs needed for a winning draw, KVCC knew what was needed but the batting order struggled to find someone to a anchor their innings.

They suffered an early setback when Pardoe was caught by Parker off Neil College for five, while Craig Wood was also dismissed when the ball richocheted off his pad and onto his wicket.

The next two wickets fell at 38 and 59, when Pinner (22) and James Ralph (22) were bowled by Colley.

With the score 59-4, KVCC looked in trouble but Andy Kimberlin hit a six before being trapped lbw by Parker on 19.

Skipper Jonathan Wright faced 19 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes before being stumped by McNeillie off the bowling of spinner Chris Davidson for 29.

KVCC still required 42 runs with just six overs remaining. Richard Kimberlin was bowled by Davidson for two, and Whelan having scored 20, became Davidson’s third scalp when he was caught and bowled.

The visitors were on 129-8 with 18 runs needed and it was left to tail-enders Mark Mansell and 17-year-old Ryan Derrick to ensure the draw.

Mansell hit 14 runs but Derrick's crucial contribution of a six off his first ball followed by five blocked shots, guided KVCC over the finishing line and made it seven games unbeaten.

KVCC entertain leaders Barnt Green in the league on Saturday.
