DOUBLES star Sophie Inchley capped a super season for Chester Road Bowling Club when she secured national success.

Inchley, 18, won the National under-25 ladies pairs title with Amy Stanton, of Broadway Bowling Club, by beating pairs from Essex, Northumberland, Cornwall and Kent to reach the final.

In a thrilling and close final the Worcestershire pair finally triumphed 16-13 against Derbyshire.

At the Worcestershire County finals, she then defeated her partner to claim the under-25s women’s singles title 21-20.

The club saw a team, captained by Ivan Poole, defeat national champions Worcester to win the Vernon Turner Cup in Pershore.

The scores were close throughout the match and only four shots separated the teams at its close.

Chester Road BC had played local team Gilt Edge BC in the semi-finals and were anticipating a very tough match against the English Top Club champions. However, Grant Burgess and James Allington each forged and then kept their leads against strong opposition for the whole match, with Alec McWhinnie and Marc Stones both limiting their opponent’s leads by intelligent defensive play.

The two sides included at least four past and present England International bowlers. However, Chester Road with its combination of youth and experience controlled the day.

Meanwhile, the quartet of Richard Payne, Pete Hopkins, Yvonne Payne and Eileen Allen beat local rivals Gilt Edge Bowling Club to win the county mixed fours title.

The Chester Road four quickly established a lead and went onto win 22-16.

This trophy has spent more time at Chester Road BC than any other Worcestershire club since its inception by John Tolley, who was previously president of the English Bowls Association.
