KIDDERMINSTER Judo star Sarah Biles rounded off an excellent year by taking first place at the England Trials for the Commonwealth Tournament.

The Samurai Judo Club star won all of her contests comfortably without ever conceding a score or even permitting a strong attack.

Despite competing in the full senior section rather than the junior section, she was far superior to all of her opponents and will head to the main tournament in Cardiff next month in good spirits.

The latest result comes just a week after an incredible experience for Biles, pictured, when she competed in the Olympic Test Event at the Excel Centre in London.

This was a dress rehearsal for the Olympics, with countries likely to qualify being required to send top competitors.

Biles came up against one of the best of these, a German who recently won the European Under 23 Championships, putting in an excellent performance lasting nearly two minutes before the score went against her.

She was also officiating the previous day, being one of six Samurai club officials who have been selected to officiate at the Olympics, the largest group from any one club.

It capped an excellent 12 months for Biles, with the highlight her fantastic performance at the Junior European Cup in Lithuania, where she took the bronze.

This qualified her for the Junior European Championships in Belgium, where she put in an excellent performance.

She also finished top of the Worcestershire judo medals table for the third time in four years.

Her medal total stands at 24, with 13 golds and nine of those coming in international events. Biles is only the second Worcestershire female player ever to gain all the contest requirements for third level black belt, which she cannot claim until next year because she is still too young.

Brendan Cummy finished second in the county medals race on 13. Three Samurai girls, Frankie Marston, Bryony Griffiths and Charis Hancocks, were close behind him on 11.

Hancocks was unlucky not to qualify for the Commonwealth Tournament, finishing third after losing her final contest late on.
