Kidderminster Carolians 46, Leamington 10

AN oustanding individual display from Andy McLellan helped Kidderminster Carolians to a vital win.

The fly-half scored 31 points including four tries, four conversions and a penalty but this was also a fine team performance, as KCs took revenge for the heavy defeat inflicted on them at Leamington back in December.

McLellan got his first points in the opening minute with a penalty in front of the posts.

Five minutes later he scored and converted the first try of the game, collecting skipper Stu Such’s pass and running three-quarters the length of the pitch to score.

The visitors couldn’t cope with the blistering start and KCs should have scored again, when the on-fire McLellan seized on a loose ball in midfield to launch another attack which ended with a knock on under the posts.

However, the reprieve was short-lived and with the visitors in complete disarray, Jake Evetts picked up yet another wayward pass to touch down under the posts, with McLellan converting.

His terrific kick then set-up the attacking lineout from which number eight Layton Wilkinson drove over for KCs third try and a 22-0 lead with less than 20 minutes gone.

Having played with such intensity in the first quarter, the hosts inevitably went off the boil and began to concede too many penalties, which allowed the visitors back into the game with a try on 30 minutes.

Nick Martin was then yellow carded for tackling a player off the ball and KCs were happy to reach half-time without further mishap.

Shortly after the restart KCs were immediately again reduced to 14 when Such was sin-binned.

Leamington ran in a second try to reduce the deficit to 22-10, however, the introduction of experienced duo Ben Turner and Matt Bennett gave KCs some new life.

Five minutes later a fine move almost put prop Matt Rigsby in at the corner and midway through the second period the two replacements took the ball on from a ruck and found McLellan, who burst through the visitors defensive line for breathing space and a bonus point try.

On 70 minutes KCs won an attacking lineout and after a couple of drives moved the ball infield, where the irrepressible No 10 got possession and ran around the outside defence to score his hat-trick try.

Now 34-10 ahead, KCs were again rampant and more good work by the forwards created a one on one for McLellan which he was never going to spurn for his fourth try.

With the final play he combined with Evetts who sent Rigsby over for KCs seventh and final try, before adding the conversion.
