DEBUTANT Nick David insists he has no intention of resting on his laurels as he looks to remain on the same path as “inspirational” academy aces Ted Hill and Ollie Lawrence.

Full-back David marked his Worcester Warriors bow with a man-of-the-match performance in the 34-22 defeat at Saracens in the Premiership Cup last Sunday.

It was a big step up for the 20-year-old who was playing for Birmingham Moseley at Loughborough Students in National One the previous weekend.

But David took it in his stride and said Worcester’s trip to Sarries turned out to be a day he would never forget as he went toe-to-toe with stars Will Skelton, Schalk Burger and Marcelo Bosch.

“When you have got someone like Skelton running down your channel things do cross your mind,” David said.

“But I tried not to think about it and just focused on my job.

“Obviously I was a bit nervous beforehand as I wanted to play well.

“But the main emphasis was enjoyment and I really did enjoy being part of the side.

“There is a really good vibe at the club at the minute with the winning streak that we had been on.

“It was a massive privilege to put on the Warriors shirt. It’s something I won’t forget.”

David made an impression last season with strong showings for Worcester Cavaliers and National Two North outfit Stourbridge.

The former Warwick School student said he was now looking to follow in the footsteps of back rower Hill and centre Lawrence who have starred in the Premiership and gained international recognition at senior level this year.

“It’s awesome to see those two excelling and it just inspires the rest of us as we can see that it is possible and positions are up for grabs,” David said.

“If we just keep working hard in training we will get our opportunities so it’s about taking them.

“It was definitely a target of mine to make my debut for the first team. It was something I was really looking forward to and it really lived up to it.

“But I want to keep pushing on, not be satisfied with that and not rest on my laurels, keep asking questions and hopefully I will get another opportunity.”

David said he had also benefitted from training alongside Warriors’ senior players during the week and honing his skills with experienced full-back Chris Pennell and academy backs transition coach Gordon Ross.

“One thing I have been working on a lot with Gordon is my kicking game,” David said.

“It’s a big difference when you get the ball in the backfield as the lines are a lot more solid so you can’t expect to run it back every time.

“My kicking game is something I will continue to work on while not forgetting the things that I am good at like footwork and passing.”

On the prospect of returning to Moseley on loan, David added: “If they want me back then I’ll get some game-time there and hopefully play well.

“The Worcester Cavaliers games will be back soon so I can look forward to those and just be competitive.”
