DIRECTOR of rugby Alan Solomons is delighted to have retained the services of “deadly goal-kicker” Duncan Weir for two more seasons.

The fly-half has become a vital cog in Solomons’ side since his arrival from Edinburgh in the summer and been rewarded with a new contract at Worcester Warriors.

Weir has racked up 119 points in 11 appearances in all competitions and has a strike-rate of almost 91 per cent in the Gallagher Premiership courtesy of 30 successful kicks from 33 attempts.

Only Leicester Tigers’ George Ford (99) has scored more points in the league than Weir whose last 19 kicks have sailed through the posts to boost his tally to 87.

The run has bettered Andy Goode’s previous club best of 12 in succession and is on track to trump Jonny Wilkinson’s Premiership record of 28 in a row.

But Solomons said he was not surprised by the 27-year-old’s impressive statistics this season.

“I obviously knew about him and I think he has definitely met my expectations,” Solomons said.

“He manages the game very well, he is a deadly goal-kicker and is a good bloke as well.

“What I like about him is that he is not the biggest man but he is tough.

“He doesn’t flinch when the big boys come running down his channel.

“He is a brave man but I suppose you’d expect that from a Glaswegian.”

Solomons said Weir had given the team “real direction” after starring in Warriors’ 23-7 victory over Pau at Sixways in the European Challenge Cup last Saturday.

“Duncan has played terrifically for us,” Solomons said.

“He is a guy who can steer us around the field and is a very experienced player.

“He has played 27 Test matches for Scotland so to have him here is fabulous.

“He has fitted in well, is happy and I think he makes an invaluable contribution to us.

“I am delighted that he has decided to extend his stay with us.”

Weir joined Warriors after two years with Edinburgh and previously won the Pro12 with Glasgow Warriors.

He has won 27 caps for Scotland and was part of his country’s set-up during this season’s autumn internationals.

Weir said: “I have really enjoyed pulling on the Warriors shirt and being out on the pitch so I am delighted to have signed a new contract.

“All the lads welcomed me with open arms when I arrived in the summer and I’ve felt at home from day one.

“These lads are all pulling in the same direction and working hard for each other and that shows with the way we’ve been playing.

“My aim now is to help us get some more wins and keep pushing up the Premiership table.”
