A CONCRETE jungle at a Kidderminster primary school is being turned into an outdoor learning environment with the help of reception children and staff.

Pupils at Heronswood Primary School have been helping to plan and design their new outdoor learning area as well as writing letters to their headteacher Matthew Ascroft asking for a new playhouse and to local businesses requesting compost, bark, slate, decking boards and plants.

Two children had the chance to visit shops including Homebase and JTF Mega Discount Warehouse, where assistant manger Rob King helped them to find vegetable seeds, flower seeds, compost and stones.

Rhoda Pierpoint, deputy headteacher, said: "Our reception children are so excited about developing their outdoor learning environment. This is the final element to make our Early Years provision outstanding.

"Our children always amaze me and the two children we took to JTF spoke confidently to Rob about what they were hoping to do in their outdoor space.

"Their enthusiasm is totally contagious. We would just like to say a huge thank you to Rob and his staff for all their help.”

Numerous changes have been made to the school since September last year to improve its early years provision including creating an open plan space for reception and specialised learning zones.
