WYRE Forest musicians will be tackling two pieces of music never before aired in Kidderminster at a town hall concert on Saturday.

As well as playing the familiar in Sibelius' Finlandia and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No4, Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra will be introducing the audience to the unfamiliar - Berlioz' dramatic King Lear Overture and Rimsky-Korsakov's Concert Fantasy for violin and orchestra.

According to conductor Daniel Watson, these works have never been aired in Kidderminster before, so on Saturday (March 7) they will be premiered at the 7.30pm concert.

Mr Watson said: "The Belioz and Tchaikovsky in particular are technically difficult and are sure to stretch the players to our limits, but 'no pain no gain' as they say and we are really looking forward to the challenge."

Those familiar with Shakespeare's play will notice the parallels drawn in Berlioz' work.

"The oboe melody in the first section of the piece is commonly regarded to represent King Lear's third daughter, Cordelia, who declares there are no words suitable to describe her love for her father, and it is my belief that the outpouring of charm and femininity espoused by this theme actually represents the love he had for his fiancée," the conductor said.

"Berlioz' obsession for women comes out through long phrases that seem to show them getting further away from his grasp, not only in this piece, but also in his drug induced epic Symphonie Fantastique, of course."

The soloist for the evening will be Sarah Farmer.
