A THEATRE group has been launched in Bewdley following the success of the town’s first passion play at Easter.

Bewdley Passion director Steve Conway and Bewdley playwright Nigel Knowles have joined forces to form the Bewdley Original Theatre which will provide a platform for original works and local talent.

Mr Conway said: “Bewdley has an amazing amount of talent in all fields of the arts but up to yet, since the demise of the Bewdley Players some years ago, does not have an outlet for acting talent.

“Nigel Knowles who is a superb and prolific playwright and I decided to combine whatever skills we have and set up a theatre group to allow these talents to come to the fore.

“The group will concentrate on giving unpublished writers an opportunity to get their works on stage, hence the word original in the name.”

The first work to be performed by the company will be Nigel Knowles’ play Knocking Doors, which is set in Kidderminster Labour Club during a general election campaign.

The play is laced with pathos and humour and reflects the efforts of political candidates, their agents and workers at a time of high stress.

It is hoped that the play will be performed at the Bewdley Festival in October.

Mr Conway added: “What I like about the play, besides Nigel’s excellent, earthy yet at times sensitive writing , is that it could be set in any political party committee rooms anywhere in the country.”
