CLEOBURY Mortimer’s MP is backing a new campaign by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s safety in the home team to raise awareness of how to prevent fires from starting in households.

The public awareness campaign runs for seven weeks throughout the summer.

Accidental fires traditionally increase during the summer holiday period, with most occurring in the kitchen. In Shropshire, 146 cooking fires were reported from April, 2012 to April, 2013. The campaign will offer advice on how to reduce the risk of accidental fire and what people should do if they discover a fire in their home.

Conservative MP Philip Dunne said: “It is incredibly important that people are reminded of the risks of fire in their homes and what they can do to mitigate any risk to themselves and their families.”

He added: “It is vitally important that Shropshire residents are vigilant against fire risks and I hope that this latest campaign from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will help protect homes and families from the dangers of fire.”
