MEMBERS of the Stretton family, together with honoured guests including Lord Cobham, Patron of the Museum of Carpet, helped celebrate the launch of its new temporary exhibition ‘A Century of Surgeons’.

The Stretton’s were three generations of a Kidderminster family, who between them gave almost 100 years of dedicated service to improve healthcare both in Kidderminster but also throughout the world.

Dr Lionel Stretton, son of Samuel, the family’s first medical man, discovered that iodine could help prevent bacterial infection but only when use in low dosages and mixed with water.

Chris Stretton, who’s book, ‘Memoirs of an Iodine Surgeon’, revealed the family’s rich medical past, while Dr Richard Taylor welcomed guests to the exhibition which has been funded by the John Weston Stretton of Kidderminster Charity, which was created when the final Stretton, grandson of Samuel, died in 2010.

To accompany the exhibition, which opened on Saturday, February 14, and runs until Saturday, July 11, the Museum staff have put together a programme of activities including joining Dr Stretton as he takes a stroll around the town.
