THE Friends of St George’s Park, a resident-led volunteer group, will be staging their sixth St George’s Day Family Fun and Discovery Event in the park on Saturday.

The Friends of St George’s Park organised event will take place on Saturday, April 25, from midday to 4pm.

The award-winning event takes place every year on the Saturday closest to St George’s Day on Thursday, April 23.

Spike Betterton, one of the event organisers, said: “This year we are aiming to make the event the best one we have done yet.

“There will be more attractions than ever before including live music from the Karpet Kickers and support acts, a bouncy castle and a bungee run, street theatre and all the old favourites like storytelling, face painting and craft making are all free of charge.”

Prominent in this year’s event, will be the Let’s Eat the Park project, also know by the acronym LEAP. There will be information on the project and its aims with opportunities to ask questions about community gardening and planting edibles in public green spaces at the LEAP stall.

The Friends of St George’s Park have set high standards for the two annual free community festivals they organise in which local and national performers take part.

Rob Brown, friends group treasurer and fundraiser, said: “When we organise events like this one we start with two basic principles.

“The first is that the event will be free to all, because whatever reason people don’t come to our events it will never be that they can’t afford to.

“The second principle is about maintaining very high quality attractions – which must always be the very best that our fundraising will allow.

“There’s a lot of goodwill out there toward self-help initiatives like ours. Local people frequently tell us what a difference we are making in the parks and we really appreciate the positive feedback we get about the impact LEAP is having locally.”
