AN event to showcase jobs and careers in the county is being hailed a success after more than a thousand young people attended.

The Worcestershire Skills Show saw around 1,200 young people attend, even though it was the first event of its kind in the county.

During the day, 15 schools including Stourport High School, Wolverley Secondary School and Hagley High School from Wyre Forest, brought their year 10 and 11 students to talk to employers and find out about the different industries operating in the county. They also had a chance to hear from industry leaders, get impartial careers advice and have a go at working in different sectors.

The Skills Show was organised by Worcestershire County Council’s Connecting Schools and Business project teams to highlight Worcestershire’s key growth sectors and provide young people with a clearer idea of the employment opportunities and the job roles which will be on offer.

A spokesman for the county council said: “We really need young people to understand the industries operating in the county which they could work in and how to progress their careers in these sectors.

“We often hear from employers about the difficulty finding the right people. By explaining to young people as early as possible what employers need now and in the future, we hope to inspire them to reach for a career locally, which will strengthen the pool of skills available and contribute to the local economy and help build a World Class Worcestershire."
