THE distraught family of a Kidderminster-born surfer who is believed to have been gunned down in Mexico fear it could be weeks before they find out exactly what happened to him.

Ian Coleman said he is still waiting for confirmation on whether two bodies discovered in a burned out camper van were that of his son Adam and his friend Dean Lucas.

Mexican authorities believe the pair were robbed and shot in Sinaloa, before the van was set alight, and have arrested three men in connection with the incident and continue to search for others involved.

But Guadalupe Martinez, spokesman for the Sinaloa attorney-general, said DNA testing on the two bodies was yet to be completed and said it could take at least another week

Adam, who is originally from Cookley, and his friend Dean Lucas were reported missing while on a road trip in Mexico on November 20.

Police in Sinaloa, on the Mexican Pacific Coast, found the camper van belonging to the two Australian nationals burned out with two bodies inside.

Adam’s mother Zena Cattermole has flown out to Mexico from her home in Australia while his girlfriend Andrea Gomez has taken one of his dreadlocks to the authorities to provide a DNA sample to help with identification.

But Ian Coleman, who still lives in Kidderminster, said: “It seems as if it could be weeks before we find out anything.

“We still don’t know anything and the bodies haven’t been identified so we are just waiting to hear further news.

“Obviously we want to know everything but until we find out what’s going on, there is nothing else we can do.”

Mr Coleman told the Shuttle last week that news about his son, who he described as a free spirit, had left him “broken”.

He added: “Adam was born in Cookley and moved out to Australia with his mother when he was a child. He is very much into his extreme sports and a national champion surfer.”
