THE historic Horsefair area of Kidderminster was handed a makeover on Friday, May 13.

Members of the community joined forces to sand down railings, plant new flowerbeds and also re-paint railings, benches, bollards and the base of the horse statue.

The work was carried out by Horsefair and Proud community group and six staff members from Specsavers IGS Group, who helped revitalise the area as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility day.

The event was organised by Alex Powell of the The Big Local DY10 Partnership, which aims to improve the Horsefair, Broadwaters and Greenhill areas of Kidderminster through volunteer work.

Tony Browne, General Manager of Specsavers IGS group, said: "Thank you to Alex and the team for organising such a terrific day.

"It was great to be invited to work with such a devoted group of individuals who showed what can be made possible by working alongside the local community and to be able to evidence the transformational effect the team can have on a local area and the difference it can make to local people."

Local businesses also provided contributions, including refreshments courtesy of grocery store Nisa.

The Old Peacock and Blue Bell pubs offered their facilities to workers, while Tasty House take-away and builders from Croft helped water plants.

WFDC Parks and Open Spaces Team also provided advice on appropriate plants and equipped workers with the tools required, while litter was picked up by Rev Nigel Taylor.

Gardener and Horsefair and Proud member, Spike Betterton, added: "It is great to be involved in a project that aims to improve an often undervalued area of Kidderminster."
