A MAN who led cops on a terrifying high-speed chase through Kidderminster streets with scant regard for the safety of others has been jailed for 15 months.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard how Mohammed Arif hit 109mph in his Vauxhall Corsa while speeding through Kidderminster to Stourbridge before driving around a children’s playground in Norton.

At one stage, the 25-year-old turned off the lights on his car before going around a blind bend at 90mph.

Mr Phillip Beardwell, prosecuting, said that Arif - currently serving a 5 year jail term for robbery and possessing an imitation firearm - raced off at high speed after being spotted in the Kidderminster area.

He made off in the direction of Stourbridge and he was seen by police officers to twice go the wrong way around a traffic island before losing control of his vehicle.

The car struck the kerb and mounted the pavement before crashing into a wall, said Mr Beardwell, but Arif drove on in his determined bid to shake off the police patrol car.

He had no regard at all for other road users before driving onto the children's play area and doing a "couple of laps" He then got out of his car and tried to escape by foot but he was quickly detained by police.

Arif, of no fixed address, admitted driving dangerously, while disqualified, without insurance and making off without paying for £19.34 worth of petrol from a garage on the Hagley Road.

Judge Michael Challinor further disqualified him from driving for three years and said he had a "shocking" criminal record. "This is a very bad case," he told Arif. “It was fortunate you did not injure yourself or a member of the public."

Mr Simon Hanns, defending, said Arif accepted his driving had been "incredibly poor" but he was now taking steps to put his life back on track when he was released from custody.
