A STOURPORT councillor is looking for support from residents and organisations to support a new twinning association to strengthen its links with Villeneuve-Le-Roi in France.

Health Concern councillor Dixon Sheppard said Stourport Town Council is disbanding the existing twinning committee and an independent group is being set up in its place.

The initiative has been backed by Stourport High School, who sent a party of pupils over to France earlier this year for a football tournament.

A party of 32 students from Villeneuve-Le-Roi will be coming over to Stourport in June and Councillor Sheppard added that they were raising funds to cover the costs of the trip.

The former Stourport Mayor along with his wife Councillor Janice Sheppard drove 360 miles his 1966 MGB Roadster from the town to Villeneuve Le Roi to celebrate 40 years of twinning between the two.

He said: “With the committee disbanding, we are keen to set up a twinning association similar to the one Kidderminster has with Husum.

“We are keen to forge stronger links with Villeneuve-Le-Roi, providing opportunities for young people and groups in both towns to take part in rewarding activities.

“We are looking for people and organisations to get involved with sponsorship and fundraising for the initiative.”
