A WORRIED resident fears someone could be killed due to persistent flooding of a Kidderminster road.

Bob Vickers said the drains on Bewdley Hill - near the Sutton Park Road junction - are struggling to cope with the volume of water in the area, resulting in huge pools of water forming on the highway.

Problems were made even worse by the recent heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Mr Vickers said he had been raising the issue with Worcestershire County Council’s highways team for months but claimed nothing had been done to alleviate the problem.

A spokesman for the authority said that work to unblock gullies had previously been undertaken but added the drainage system was at capacity due to the poor weather and urged drivers in the area to be extra cautious.

Mr Vickers said: “This is a disgrace and something needs to be done about it.

“The drain on Bewdley Hill simply cannot cope. It doesn’t take away any surface water and this is causing flooding across the carriageway. It is spreading to Sutton Park Road and clearly causing a traffic hazard.

“That junction is already very dangerous and something needs to be done about it. It is a very busy road and carries traffic to the Safari Park, Severn Valley Railway and beyond.

“People are always getting drenched by passing traffic but more seriously than that, it really is a danger to life. A serious crash could easily happen.”

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: "We are aware that a complaint has been raised and have previously jetted the drains.

“We believe that the recent issues were caused by the Severn Trent system being at capacity due to poor weather. In times of high intense rainfall, like the rain experienced over this weekend, flash flooding is possible in places.

“We urge all drivers to proceed with caution during severe weather conditions."
