A WOLVERLEY school is set to reopen as usual after the Easter holidays following a "significant" fire last week.

Wolverley CE Secondary School was forced to shut after a blaze broke out in the roof of the music block on Thursday.

Hereford and Worcester Fire & Rescue Service sent six fire appliances to the fire, and a further two appliances were requested after the blaze spread rapidly across the roof.

The fire was swiftly brought under control, preventing further damage to the rest of the school.

The school was closed on Friday so that the damage could be assessed and to start the process of ensuring the school could reopen after the Easter break.

In a message on the school's Facebook page, headteacher Bryn Thomas said: "Due to the very quick actions of staff and the fire service, the damage has been contained.

"This means that with some work over the next few weeks we will be in a position to open as usual after Easter.

"Supporting students remains a priority and I can confirm that our holiday revision sessions will still go ahead as planned.

"May I take this opportunity to thank you again and wish you a happy and peaceful Easter break."

Following the blaze, Group commander Adrian Farmer said: "Quick actions and high-quality firefighting tactics from the crews and officers on scene contained the fire to a relatively small area and prevented significant damage to the rest of the school."

The cause of the fire is being investigated by specialist fire investigation officers.
The Wolverley community reacted with upset and devastation to the news of the blaze.

One Facebook user wrote: "Absolutely gutted for you all as a school. It’s devastating. I hope there isn’t too much damage or disruption caused."
