New Sixways owners Atlas confirm they have held 'positive' talks with RFU and DCMS regarding returning Worcester Warriors to the Championship.

The RFU's deadline for clubs wanting to submit an application to compete in the Championship is February 14 (tomorrow).

It suggests there has been a U-turn from the new owners Jim O'Toole and James Sandford on a decision for Warriors to return and be a part of England's second-tier next season.

Last week, they confirmed they were pulling out of any application to be in the 2023/24 Championship as part of a major shake-up, which included bringing Stourbridge RFC to Sixways and rebranding the team under the name 'Sixways Rugby'.

But now, O'Toole has said that Atlas are still exploring all possibilities: "We have had a positive meeting with the DCMS and the RFU and we are pleased that the RFU are happy to work with us to return top-flight rugby to Worcester.

"We are continuing to explore all possibilities; including with returning to the Championship and we thank both the DCMS and RFU for agreeing to work with us on all these proposals."

The Worcester News have approached the RFU for comment but are yet to receive a response.

Last week, the RFU commented that any proposed name change or relocation of a club would have to be rattified by the RFU in order for it to go through.

A statement released, after Atlas' proposal went public, by the RFU read: "The RFU has been clear that its priority was to enable Worcester Warriors to play in the Championship and Worcester Warriors Women in the Premier 15s in a sustainable way.

"The information required has been asked for repeatedly and deadlines were extended to provide the best possible chance for this to happen.

"The RFU will now consult with the local rugby community over the proposed relocation of Stourbridge RFC and the change of name.

"Our priority is to ensure the best interests of rugby and the rugby community are preserved."
