A HGV driver from Wolverley has undergone an incredible weight loss transformation after doctors warned he "probably wouldn't live to see 50".

Wayne Haywood, aged 57, went for his HGV medical check around eight years ago when he was told his weight put him at an increased risk of suffering a heart attack.

Then weighing 27 stone, Mr Haywood was unable to kneel down to play with his grandchildren and found it frustrating at times when his weight would act as a barrier.

Mr Haywood said: "The doctor told me I probably wouldn't live to see 50 if I carried on the way I was.

"It was so challenging not being able to kneel and it felt like I was carrying around two people all the time.

"People would sometimes snigger when they saw me and it was really humiliating. I knew something had to change as I wanted to live especially for my children and grandchildren."

Mr Haywood decided he needed to turn his life around and joined a Stourbridge Slimming World group to help him shed the pounds.

Despite some challenges including the loss of his father, eight years later the HGV driver has managed to lose almost 14 stone in weight and has already noticed the difference it has made to his quality of life.

Mr Haywood said: "I feel like a completely different person. I can play with the grandkids, I can breathe easier and I even feel younger. It's completely changed my life.

"There were times when I felt like giving up, but it's the best decision I've ever made and I feel like a better person."

His wife, Paula Haywood, aged 52, who is a Slimming World consultant for the Stourport group and works for Jet 2, said: "I'm just so proud of him for reaching his dream weight. It's not just about the physical challenges, it has required Wayne to have a complete mental turnaround.

"It has been fantastic seeing his confidence grow and it makes me so emotional to think of the journey he's been on."

Mr Haywood has since gone back for another HGV medical check with the same doctor giving him a clean bill of health.

He added: "It was the exact same doctor that had seen me all those years ago and he just couldn't believe I was the same person.

"He said it was a remarkable transformation and I'm as fit as a fiddle.

"I also want to thank my family for their support and Marie Hounslow who was the consultant at the Stourbridge Slimming World group where I started my journey. I couldn't have done it without them."
