Richard Brandon’s parents, Anne and Geoff Brandon, have written this special tribute to their son and asked the Shuttle to publish it as part of our coverage of the soldier’s funeral.

'RICHARD was part of our family for more than 25 precious years and we have many memories of him that will always be cherished in our hearts.

Richard was once described by one of our most respected friends as barmy army, probably the most truthful words ever said about him.

From when he joined the army cadets, it was clear that he was going to make the army his career.

Richard perhaps should have done better at school, but his only course of direction was to go in the army.

In 2002 he started his new life at the army college, where he learned his trade.

He went on to serve in Iraq, then came back to go to college.

Today as we read the tributes and listen to the stories from his comrades, two words fill us with great pride, they are craftsman and respect, and they mean so much to us.

We know that many of Richard’s comrades are serving, or waiting to be deployed, so to all of their families we would say, ‘be proud of them’, for it takes courage to be a soldier. We also know it takes courage to be part of a soldier’s family and we hope with all our hearts that they come home safely to you.

Sadly, Richard will not be with us any more, we will miss his cheeky grin, his army stories and his plans for the future, but he has left us a beautiful daughter who in years to come will be able to read all the many tributes made to her dad.

To our family and friends, we would like to say a big thank you for all the support you have given us, the cards and tributes you have sent us and all the hugs you have given us, so simple but having so much meaning.

Last but not least we would like to thank you all for being a part of his life.

You will all have your own memories of Richard and we hope you will remember him with a smile, and with pride for the man he became'.
